When I started this journey, I really had NO idea what the path would look like to accomplish my goal. Now, I’m still not sure how all of the things I am doing and experiencing fit together to make it all happen but I’m confident it will be interesting!
Back in January, as I was learning and practicing my newly acquired technical skills, I saw a need to actually improve how I framed my subjects in camera to better express my point of view. In addition, I knew I needed to get to know other photographers to expose myself to different techniques, ideas, other skills I may not even know about and to be part of a like-minded community. A big part of learning about other photographers and the more subjective parts of photography has been through listening to podcasts. I love filling my brain with information while I do any of the mundane things in life that HAVE to get done. One of these is produced by Brent Bergherm, a photographer and professor at Walla Walla University. He has a love of the art and nature as well as an enthusiasm for life that is contagious. It’s called the Latitude Photography Podcast and he is creating an educational component called the Latitude Photography School.
Sometimes I feel an overwhelming push to do something but have how NO IDEA why I should do it or what it will look like. Well, this perfectly describes this feeling when, back in January, shortly after I made this “impossible” goal, I heard Brent put out a casting call for some “regulars” to be on his podcast. I KNEW I had to send him an email, tell him about this goal and that I’m an enthusiastic beginner. He chose 8 regulars, including me (I was surprised!) and now I’ve been on twice AND made some new friends in the process. I have found that no matter what self talk I do to calm my mind, I end up chatting nervously anyway. I hope that didn’t come through! I definitely felt like I was out of my comfort zone discussing things that I have only just started to understand. My hope is that other beginners can relate to my experiences and that I can inspire others to make stretch goals for themselves. I am SO thankful to all that have welcomed me to this crazy and wonderful work! I would love to hear about a time YOU stepped out of your comfort zone and what it meant for you.
Oh, and if you have any podcast suggestions, let me know! Help me become a more interesting person;)

2 images I discuss in the podcast. Not sure if they are worth working on but I think the locations are worth at least another visit!
